The Health Sciences Program
The Academy of Health Sciences at Cohen High School opened in August 2008 with a class of 141 9th grade students. Cohen students prepare for future careers in Health Sciences, taking advantage of opportuniites at medical insitutions such as Touro, Ochsner, LSU, Tulane, and Children's Hospital. College opportunities are available at Dillard, Tulane, Xavier, LSU, and UNO.
The administrators, teachers, and staff of Walter L. Cohen take pride in preparing and implementing a rigorous, technology-based curriculum focusing on the latest research strategies. Teachers and staff address a variety of learning styles and are dedicated to changing the way educators research, communicate, and teach.
Cohen's curriculum focuses on rigorous courses which are research-based and rewarding. Student course selction includes the general Louisiana Department of Education classes; in addition, Cohen offers such courses as: Creative Writing, Journalism, Speech and Debate, African-American Studies, Sociology, Psychology, Pre-Calculus, Physics, Certified Nursing Assistant, First Responder, Nutrition and Food, Pre-Medical and Sports Medicine. Dual enrollment is available for college credit.
Our top priority is students interested in the Health Sciences. This career field requires students to be responsible, serious, and driven. With this responsibility, however, comes great rewards. Students who remain in the Academy of Health Sciences will receive free health care in our Student Health Clinic. Student interns receive bi-monthly paychecks for coming to school and participating in our programs.
